Hey everybody,
I just got out of back surgery three days ago. I had what they call a laminectomy, where part of my spine was removed from my lumbar area to alleviate “nerve compression“. There’s nothing wrong with the structure of my spine and there are no damage discs, but I have to rest and rehab obviously. I will be working with a physical therapist, but honestly, the way my back feels now and the amount of time I’ve been sideline for the past five months,I think I would really be afraid to ever get into grappling or fantasy pro wrestling ever again.
Has anyone on this site also had back surgery and if so, did you ever get back to full capacity?
I am sorry to hear of any back and spinal surgeries, but depends on type where and recovery. I had a tumor on spinal cord mid point could not walk or move legs. Mother had a slipped disk closer to the tailbone numbness in her feet. you need to take time to find out what you can and can not do. removal of tumor afterwards same as a slipped disc in back slight pat momentary parales in legs BUMPS HITS NO. Friends know I do submission wrestling with out the bumps and back hits. you must heal and find out what you can handle.
I've had two lower back surgeries, one similar to yours and the second more serious. I am back to some grappling but not at the full capacity that I once was. I think you will be able to get back into it but will have to watch yourself in certain positions and moves that you know may compromise your back. I still enjoy my time on the mat and it can be managed. I'd be happy to chat more about it if you wish.
Sorry to hear that man. Did they say there still may be hope with continued physical therapy? The more you get into the process the more you start to hear things like “nerves are pretty tricky and you never know“ 😒

3 different physical therapists and one acupuncturist were not helpful. The only thing that’s made a difference is working out with a persona trainer.
