Promotions are about skills and commitment (time devoted to mastering the craft). Tournaments are not for everyone that trains in BJJ, most BJJ practitioners do not compete. That said, it's best for the School and the Tournament competitor (representative of that school) to compete when they are feeling at their best at their belt status in their division. Most people peak just before they are eligible for promotions, but they have been training for months prior for a Tournament at their current belt level. No, they should not be punished for being worthy of a promotion. No, it's not deceitful to compete are your current belt level. It is not sandbagging, that something else entirely. The other thing about leveling-up is that it takes some getting used to, sometimes months to feel comfortable in that new status among your peers at the Dojo, but much longer to be prepared to meet your new rivals at a Tournament Level match. That's a decision best made between the tournament participant and the Head Coach of his/her School.
Do u think it is tight for dojos to hold back promotions or for participants request that their promotion be held back until after the next competition? This allows them to get a medal easier against weaker opponents.
Personally I do not like the practice as if you are qualified for the higher belt than you should compete at the higher belt. Defeating someone (s) that are in reality now at a lower level than you, what does it show? I believe the famous expression applies here. "It is better to be a tail among lions than a head among foxes"
