Posting numbers would result in members getting spammed hard, and scammed as well. Sending face pics to those you don't know can result in blackmail attempts and other scams. There are the the most common scams running around meet up websites right now, so no, I don't think it's a good idea.
Gosh if it were compulsory to show a number that would be so open to abuse, it would undoubtedly get harvested for data etc...
I don't think sharing a contact number is even a necessary precondition for a meet to happen. I've had a couple where we didn't share numbers.
If a meet is gonna happen it's gonna happen, and it should become fairly clear through communication on here whether that the direction the discussion could go in. With practice I think it's easy to start to spot the signs.
It's always a two way street though, and as others have said, it takes effort on both guys part to make it happen.

If they are going to use it for j/o materiel, what's stopping them from using a non-working number? Or, a throwaway number used only for verification?
Requiring a number won't stop the flakes. It just causes problems for all users.
