I'm a bit late to this but have you looked into PRP for this? Depending on where the tear is, especially the rotor cuff, PRP can have decent results. It's where they take your blood, separate it, inject the platelets and plasma into tendons, cartilage, and ligaments to help them heal as they have less blood flow than the muscle itself.
When it comes to the muscle itself, you may be able to use blood flow restriction training (BFR) so that you can increase your results while using less load on the injured muscle. (Talk to your doctor first)
Active release technique, cupping, massage, and Graston technique can also be helpful for torn muscles. The reasons people don't get normal function back is because scar tissue forms which inhibits the muscle from sliding properly creating altered movement patterns and inhibiting the natural function of a muscle. Doing these therapies in recovery can help you get as close to normal function back as possible while also preventing reinjury. Given your age I would highly recommend talking to your doctor first as there is an inherent higher risk.
I am already set up for PRP on the left shoulder that is not as bad as the right shoulder and if successful they will try it on the right shoulder. Due it not being covered by insurance ($1350 total for both) have put a link to a go fund me page in my profile. My right shoulder cortisone shot was supposed to be today but somehow caught a mild case of Covid (have had 9 shots) and the cortisone is postponed to at least Monday. Doing PT again starting Tuesday if I test negative by the. Never heard of cupping or grafton technique but will look it up and talk to my Orthopedist about them if I find them appealing. Feel free to send any other ideas by DM. Thanks
Sorry to hear you got injured. That hasn’t happened to me, so I have no idea, I guess until such time as somebody’s had a good look at it you don’t really know how severe it is. But I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.
Last Monday in doing a takedown counter drill in bjj class fell on my right arm giving me an apparent bicep tear. Had something similar in my left arm many weeks ago grom a hyper extension that is nearly healed and was not as severe. Since first available PCP appt is 3/25 and first available sports med specialist appt is 3/31 cannot be sure until after I see the above doctors but calls and messages to PT people and others in the know go along with the above. Has anyone in this group experienced anything similar and how was the recovery? Thanks
I had the same injury when i was applying an armbar. It was painful and, unfortunatly, it dont have a cure. If it gets worse, its surgery… I feel a little Pain sometimes, but it cost me the blue belt. I had other injuries from bjj. Because it all, i just gave up training. Doctor said tô me that you have to train your muscles, irrespective tô What sport you are training.
Tô answer your question, bíceps injury has no recorver. You just live with, try to make your muscle stronger, phisiotherapy etc. but it Will never be like it was again.
Btw, i dont consider myself coming Back tô bjj
I have a left bicep tear but was told that PT can strengthen the other areas around it and fortunately insurance covers the therapy. But more serious have major rotator cuff injuries, complete tear in the right side, partial on the left. The orthopedist is going to try PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma) therapy on the let side and if successful will try it on the right side. Unfortunately this procedure is considered "experimental" and is not covered by m insurance. It anyone wants to help please see the gofundme page on m profile. The alternative, also not covered by insurance is the more expensive stem cell therapy. The procedures covered by insurance such as shoulder replacement were not advised to limitation of motion and inability to continue bjj, not to mention 6 months in a sling. To me bjj is everything and I can get by by letting my training partners know to avoid the right shoulder/arm etc if possible. If they get me in arm bar danger on the right I either tap or ask them to just take the left arm. Fortunately, my best move from both standing and on the ground, the fireman's carry is not affected as I do it in such a way holding there tricep super tight to my body as I do the move. We have several injured participants with injuries in different areas and we all know to avoid the inured areas. This is also the reason that at home, despite having mats, that I limit home training to practicing techniques rather than hard rolling as best to leave the rolling to the dojo. Thanks
