The fact tbat i have learned to train bjj when I have arthritis and tendonitis. I am 57 and train 3-5 days a week and learned to train and roll while keeping my limitations in mind. Developing a solid recovery regimen has been a tremendous help
Massage can be great for tendinitis but if the tendon is weakening prp (the injection of your own plasma and platelets into the tendon) can help it heal. You can also get a cupping set and put it over the muscle and move through a range of motion to break up the fascia which will take tension off the tendon to allow it to heal. I like contrast therapy for arthritis (and tendinitis) where you put one arm in a bucket of ice water and one in a bucket of hot (roughly 110 degrees) water for 1 minute and then switch 10 times finishing with both in hot water. I'll keep extra ice and hot water near by to regulate the water temps. You can add salt to the ice water to get it below 32 degrees but I find 32 to be more than cold enough. You can do the same for legs too. Diabetes and heart disease can be contraindications for hydrotherapy so talk to your doctor if you have either. Avoid using nsaids if you can as these reduce the inflammatory response which will blunt the healing process making it take longer and the final result will be weaker than letting it heal naturally. Ice has a similar effect but alternating ice and heat will reduce swelling and increase circulation which will reduce pain and encourage healing. Massage like trigger point, active release technique, and graston (more responsible gui sha) can also help.
Well I didn’t quit when I really felt like it several times last year, and I got a blue belt this year. I would’ve never experienced anything like that, the crazy shark tank, the congrats from everyone in the school, if I’d given up too soon. I’m 49, it’s never too late to try something cool and stick with it!
Have fun, getting your blue belt is like getting a target painted on your back, people stop being nice when you roll but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
BJJ - I m proud of my medals at the ibjjf worlds, euros.... and that its a sport for every1 - it gives people good energy...and by bjj the whole world speaks 1 language... its full of joy
Helping beginners get started in the sport. I made it to purple belt but the thing I’m really proud of is helping others learn the basics and seeing where they go from there. A few of them surpassed me and I’m proud of them as athletes and friends.
I suffer from gastritis and daily nausea and rolling kills me sometimes. I got my blue belt and I'm still training. It sucks because it's my favorite thing in the world and my stomach kills it for me, but I'm still there and I am going to get my blackbelt.
I totally agree and give u a lot of credit for going to BJJ classes and rolling in your condition. While many of us also have medical issues they are pale in comparison to yours. The biggest obstacle I face is the walk from the bus stop that has been doubled due construction near the BJJ school and the buses being rerouted to a street causing a longer walk in the extreme heat to the gym. But once I arrive at BJJ class in the air conditioned gym I know it was worth the effort.
Having grappled with three guys (separate occasions) with advanced belts One black belt) in TKD, taking them down, and making them tap. First time, I thought it was sheer luck; as been over 50 years since doing TKD at a Jhoon Rhee facility – other two times suggest it wasn't sheer luck; and the only way anyone will know what it was is ----- ----- ----- yeah! You guessed correctly how to find our. Nonetheless, it was a BJJ-type maneuver.
PS I want to find some BJJ training partners who can train with me in my matroom here in my house. The only commercial places in walking distance went out of business (and were too expensive, anyway).

Great advice! I am familiar with cupping and it did help relieve tenosynivitus in my right thumb and wrist.
I have great success with Tylenol and using ice sleeves made by KT. I have also done contrast therapy as well as may add thst to the recovery regimen.
