Compliments: Recommendations Simplified
Recommendations have always been a part of our site. They serve many good purposes.
A good recommendation tells a story about you that you yourself couldn't tell. It helps others understand you better, and grounds your profile in a way your introduction cannot. You write in your introduction "I am really strong", and I'll think, "Okay sure". But seeing a bunch of your recommendations complimenting you on your strength? Now I know better what I might be getting into if I were to meet you.
Recommendations also help you remember a truly epic meeting, or maybe a less-than-epic one but still memorable in some way. Time capsules of your experiences, right there in your profile. Trust me, your 10-year-into-the-future self will thank you for them!
But let's face it: not all recommendations are created equal. Writing them can be hardย (and reading even harder, I'm looking at you, person who never uses paragraphs and punctuation!!).ย Sometimes the insipration doesn't strike, or you feel you can just repeat everything that was already said and written before. We're not all born writers. You still want to give a recommendation because the other guy deserves it, but the words are not coming.
Enter "Compliments". Instead of writing a narrative text, you can choose from a set of compliments that capture the essence of your meeting. These compliments capture the basics of a simple recommendation that you might give after a wrestling meeting. To propose a few examples:
- "Very strong"
- "Great technique"
- "Incredible stamina"
- "Good sportsmanship"
- "Punctual and reliable"
- "Easy to communicate with"
- "Fun to be around"
- "Dominant"
- "Respectful and humble"
See what I mean? Pick two, maybe three compliments that best describe your meeting. It's easy to write, easier to read, and serves at least some bits of the purpose of a full recommendation. If you find compliments a bit impersonal, you can combine these with a full recommendation or a short personal note to give it extra flavor.
We want to hear from you!
What do you think about this feature?
Would you find it useful?
What compliments would you like to give or receive?
Your ever-thoughtful feedback is WANTED!
And a quick poll:
- I would like to give compliments
- I would like to receive compliments
- I have ideas for compliments (add comment below)
- I don't like this idea
- I'm undecided

9/07/2026 7:00 AMI think "Compliments" are a good idea in addition to "Recommendations", but not as a replacement. So let's have both options!

Agree. There's nothing like a thoughtfully written rec to give me an idea of who this stranger REALLY is. Checkboxes are a good idea, but mostly since they provide a lower bar to doing *something* :-)
LanceFighter (98 )
9/07/2026 7:02 AMSeems an exciting and engaging new feature ๐ช

9/07/2026 7:05 AMAgree with StrikeFighter, both sounds like a really really good idea!
Fwre71 (22)
9/07/2026 7:14 AMI like the idea if that is an additional feature and still some text can be entered and is encouraged. People and matches are to special, different and unique to fit into 5 or eight classes of compliments only.
SFFight (84)
9/07/2026 7:18 AMKeep both... some guys dont like doing recommendations and some really use it to give a good feel of what a guy is like to meet. For those who struggle with recommendations, the compliments give them the option to summarizing their experience but expand the compliment choices.
GlobalGrappler (97 )
9/07/2026 7:27 AMRe the comment choices, something along the lines of "sexy af" would be helpful
And somewhat off topic, can we add a WOOF feature as well for when browsing profiles please? ๐
PecsAbsFan (42)
9/07/2026 7:41 AMI would definitely keep both Recommendations and Compliments. Most of the suggested Compliments are basic and only scratch the surface about describing an opponent. I would suggest adding additional compliments such as: "excellent heel," "excellent jobber," "excellent gutpuncher," "safe and respectful." There are probably other more characteristic-related compliments that could be added that align with the interest check boxes available in a profile. I also second the idea from GlobalGrappler about having a WOOF feature or something similar that provides a quick way to let another member know that you are interested in connecting with them without having to write a complete message.

One thing I wanted to emphasize: One of the best things about this site is the availability of Recommendations. It's a great way to corroborate a user's profile (especially when a profile is light on content) and ensure that a good connection will be made with another user. I understand that some people don't enjoy writing so I understand there is a potential audience for Compliments. However, there are a lot of users (me included) who enjoy writing and reading Recommendations and rely on them identify potential opponents, so please do not remove that functionality (regardless of what gets decided about Compliments). Thanks!

9/07/2026 8:37 AMI think the compliments would work well -within- recommendations, a bit like how interests work on the profile
Recommendation ae a tricky thing, how much do you write, what do you actually say- are you just using vague generic phrases. I think perhaps even have the option to say "I'd recommend" and nothing more. The more curious can enquire.
Jorgefighter (278)
9/07/2026 8:48 AMI agree with StrikerFighter: I'd keep the recommendations with this new feature as an extra.
As per other compliment suggestions:
"Good fighting area" for these who have mats.
"Pedagogic" for these who like to teach holds to other people.
"Great heel/great jobber".

9/07/2026 9:09 AM(In reply to this)
Hey, I like those recommendations, especially the top two!!!
lucario (90 )
9/07/2026 2:11 PM(In reply to this)
The fight area feels nice but isnโt necessarily bound to the person, what if Iโm travelling or I move apartments, then they would have to reset the recommendations
damon (106 )
9/07/2026 9:10 AMWhat I like about recommendations is that it's personal. It's my diary and memories book. Please don't take it away.
The best way (I think) would be to had tags to it. But definitely not taking it away
lucario (90 )
9/07/2026 11:00 AMOne thing Iโve been thinking about: should we be able to give just one compliment or a limited number, so that each profile highlight the qualities people are most known for, or all that apply, so that it can be more exhaustive?

9/07/2026 5:09 PM(In reply to this)
I think [up to] 3 is a solid number; enough of a constraint to have you think carefully, but also wide enough to get some precision.
for example: "This person is strong" vs "This person is strong and a good teacher"
lucario (90 )
9/07/2026 5:14 PM(In reply to this)
I guess it really depends on how many types of compliments they will create
New2this (41 )
9/07/2026 11:25 AMI'm not sure I'm a fan of this. It feels a bit Linkedin. I'd much rather read/write a more personal and customised recommendation of the meeting to get a flavour of the person

9/07/2026 12:44 PMCompliments sound good as an addition. (in the form of badges on a profile tab - as shown)
Just having AI written responses takes away part of the social aspect of the site and replaces it by soulless comments that can even be misleading at times.

9/07/2026 12:56 PMI prefer the recommendations because you can also pick up on some interesting things between the lines. And Iโm afraid that a lot of the recommendations would end up being replaced by compliments, simply because theyโre quicker and easier to click on โ we all have our lazy side.
JustKenAgain (12 )
9/07/2026 1:02 PMSometimes it is difficult to for me to come up with a narrative so "compliments" would be a handy tool. However, they seem a bit cold and impersonal. I would favor using them in addition to the standard written recommendation.

9/07/2026 1:04 PMIk schrijf graag in de aanbeveling hoe het gevecht gegaan is en welke grepen er toegepast zijn en of er uit kon worden ontsnapt enzovoort!

9/07/2026 1:47 PMI like the idea of having both recommendations and compliments. Iโd also suggest another feature: the ability to โLIKEโ a photo on someoneโs profile. Sometimes I see a pic and think โWow! So handsome!โ Or โOutstanding physique!โ It would be nice to be able to give MF members positive feedback.
lucario (90 )
9/07/2026 1:56 PM(In reply to this)
Agreed but make the count only visible to the owner of the pic like instagram did. No reason to turn it into a popularity contest
litewt78 (103)
9/07/2026 2:00 PMI think the initial list is too long.
"dominant" is likely not going to apply to the jobbers on here, and there's already a selection on the profile for that. Unless dominant is considered some kind of compliment, but it should not be.
Of the initial list, I think it should be only these:
"Good sportsmanship"
"Punctual and reliable"
"Easy to communicate with"
The rest are either unnecessary or confusing. But great idea!
lucario (90 )
9/07/2026 2:08 PM(In reply to this)
Agree on dominant but I feel like we should have a โphisically strongโ vs โvery technicalโ thing, that often escapes reviews
donner1 (24)
9/07/2026 2:58 PMI would keep both then guys can choose to write or choose options that best describe the opponent the had met.
x swimmer (17 )
9/07/2026 3:13 PMI would keep both, but make it easier to find when writing a recommendation! I always have to hunt for where to do it. It seems like an unnecessarily complicated process.

9/07/2026 3:39 PMLike anything else something can be abused. I like the idea MeetFighters has come up with. Sometimes when writing a review or compliment I am at a loss for words trying not to repeat the same phrases over and over.

9/07/2026 4:23 PMEveryone on this site is an individual and I still believe that written recommendations specific to that individual , one's experience, is important. I do like the option of having recommendations and I believe they would work well together.
liketowrestle (137)
9/07/2026 4:29 PMKeep the recommendations feature as it gives a person the ability to tailor the message to their opponent and add the compliments as another option for those who are not great at the art of writing especially typing on a cell phone.

9/07/2026 6:42 PMIn addition to recommendations - maybe a few buttons you can click on during the recommendation. I'd keep these to a small number and not too granular.
AgentPoseidon (41 )
9/07/2026 6:48 PMI'm glad you're encouraging recommendations. Each time I see a one sided recommendation it makes the one not giving one look bad.
Chris Flashman (37 )
9/07/2026 7:19 PMIt almost seems as if this is a solution looking for a problem. I agree with those who suggest retaining the freestyle recommendation, with "compliments" as an extra. If you make it "compliments" only, the likelihood is that fighters with a stack of matches will end up with many identical sets of generic compliments. Which doesn't necessarily tell us anything.
lucario (90 )
9/07/2026 7:22 PM(In reply to this)
I mean the post says โIf you find compliments a bit impersonal, you can combine these with a full recommendationโ!
Yan (7)
9/07/2026 9:18 PMMy opinion looks as if it's going to be unpopular but I don't really see the point in 'Compliments' - we have Recommendations which covers most compliments and is more expressive and more likely to give a indication of the person in question. It further messes up the screen with information which I would think is redundant as it is already in Recommendations. When Recommendations are one sided one has to draw ones own conclusion taking into account other comments in Recommendations. As you say some people don't like to make Recommendations but I doubt any are so illiterate that they can't.
But ... let me COMPLIMENT you on your continuing efforts on this site and trying out new ideas - making this a great, great site ... thanks.
Pretzeler (96)
9/07/2026 11:22 PMThank you for opening the feature for discussion ๐
I voted against the idea because it introduces a numeric scoring/review system for each meetup. Instagram added the option to hide number of likes because of criticism for its negative effect on user wellbeing. I would like an option to disable it if it's introduced. I don't want meetups to turn into an impersonal performance/competition for equivalents of likes.
lucario (90 )
9/08/2026 1:18 AM(In reply to this)
But isnโt the number of recommendations already that?
Thatโs why I think there should be a cap to the compliments a single person can give, so it naturally smooths out and just highlights the most important features of each person
NoviusInfernalBerserk (4)
9/08/2026 1:33 AM(In reply to this)
You mean a cap to the compliments a single person can give to one person? It should definitely only be one, yes. I'd disagree with a general cap, though. This would just be too punishing to people who actually meet many people.
NoviusInfernalBerserk (4)
9/08/2026 1:28 AM(In reply to this)
Fair enough. I get this point and think it's really interesting, but I would like to add that one's issues with "hunting for likes" are their own and shouldn't really be the issue of the website. Overall, this function would create a great overview of what someone is offering and therefore be a huge + for the website. Although personal recommendations shouldn't vanish of course.
NoviusInfernalBerserk (4)
9/08/2026 1:09 AMHonestly, additions & additional options are always a good thing. Recommendations are great & should be kept as an option, but they really aren't required and I'm saying this as someone who loves to write sometimes. It's perfectly fine to just be able to add a small pre-formed sentence with a compliment. In the end, it still shows what you mean to say. I wouldn't use them because I personally think it's better to write something personal, but having it as an option for others is a good thing.
BR2Tampa (7 )
9/08/2026 5:23 AMI like having both options. I also think there good be a few others;
Good hygiene
Great host
Respectfully of boundaries and limits
Subzero (39 )
9/08/2026 10:20 PMIs it just like a like or a school mark like 1-5?
And is it anonymous?
lucario (90 )

Ooh the anonymous part could add a layer to it
Megawatt (14)
9/08/2026 10:51 PMThe compliment list format is similar to the selections for match structure, wrestling style, etc. as we complete our profiles. Sounds like a good, shorthand idea but like others have said, I'd like to be able to write full recommendations.
Wrestlingdudegr (2)
9/09/2026 8:50 PMI think that having both options for every match is a good idea. I think that a Recommendation tells a story and gives you a good idea of what the other wrestler is like. Compliments shouldn't replace Recommendations though.
Wrestler29 (9 )
9/11/2026 5:52 PMIt would be great to have this as an option in addition to the current setup!
Wres 75 (10 )
9/11/2026 11:36 PMYou can have an LLM extract compliment tags from existing recommendation text and let users choose between giving compliments vs still going through the classic recommendation route (I personally enjoy creative writing) and have compliments suggestions extracted from the written text.
You donโt need a complex LLM an open model running on prem would suffice since this isnโt very complex nor niche.
Reach out if you need tech advice

9/11/2026 11:52 PM(In reply to this)
Thatโs really cute tbh but I would remove the part where it suggests not to post the recommendation, justโฆ recommend the compliments
WRSLCOACH (60)
9/13/2026 4:19 AMLove it! โก๏ธ Yes, and not a moment too soon before people start using LLMโs to manufacture their experiences.๐ฎโ๐จ
And while although nothing beats a well thought out recommendation, not all meetups and matches are deserving of such a memento. ๐ซฆ
There have been a number of occasions where I wanted to leave a recommendation but I found myself struggling with the words to convey my sentiment and simply speechless. ๐ค
I am all for a combination of both๐ compliment + recommendation. ๐
Anyone can use an LLM to give them ideas, but unfortunately, people wanting a shortcut will not tailor suggestions from an LLM.
Thus ultimately making said recommendation feel hollow, sterile, and completely ingenuous to their voice (I'm looking at you, person who never uses paragraphs and punctuation!!) ๐๏ธ๐๐๏ธ
Ereignis (33 )
9/14/2026 8:55 PMHmm... that idea could lead to the ability to express one's own thoughts withering even further. The use of a symbol should be linked to a brief text of one's own so that the brain does not switch off completely.

9/16/2026 12:00 AMWould it not be a good idea to expand compliments with some neutral and even negatives, thus compliments becomes pro's/con's, we've all met that guy where things were great apart from this one little ick

29 days agoMy fear is that compliments will eat away on recommendations and therefore the most important tool of our site to get an estimation about how safe it is to meet a certain user will erode away, which would be a pity.
THis feature would make it easier to handle the aftermath of a meeting, but in the long-term on the cost of preparing a meeting when recommendations suffer from compliments - and they will because this feature will not only encourage those guys who would not have written a recommendation to give at least some feedback, no, it surely will als cause some guys who would have written a recommendation to just use the easier, more comfortable (for them at that moment), and quicker way, thus recuding the number fo recommendations in the long run.
But I do love how the site still is evolving with new ideas and how open it is to ideas from the users.

24 days agoWhat about an extremely detailed checklist for writing a recommendation, instead of this mechanism of "slogans"? The purpose is to
- help recall the important points: the 5 Ws + How and Why.
- help people who do not tell the "bad" parts in a positive review, for the fear of sounding harsh.
Recommendations should be straight to the point, with ideas clearly separated. I'm seeing unformatted walls of text, with the narrative of the match intermixed with the opinions.
I think serious people take the time to read and an UX based on compliments can instead make the userbase self-select in an unwanted direction (as seen on certain other websites).
Another thing, some of the suggested slogans seem biased, implying that being confident and outgoing is a compliment, instead it is a personality trait and what matters (to me) is actually the good will of a person.
RECOMMENDATION CHECKLIST / TEMPLATE Change the text to your liking and feel free to make it as personal as you want. When and where We met at his house / bar / ... He was on time / not on time. His room is wide / tidy / quiet. He has a large tatami. What SHORTLY tell what happened. :-) Who He was particularly committed to learn / teach / win / make sure I'd enjoy the match to its fullest / enjoying the match himself. He is very strong / I was stronger. He has a great technique. / He has a lot to learn. He is easy to communicate with. / He does not always communicate his thoughts clearly. He is talkative and outgoing. / He is focused and straight to the point. He respects interpersonal boundaries. / I liked that he has a lot of stamina and energy, however he sometimes was a bit overfamiliar. Motivation He was very determined to improve his technique. / He likes to be encouraged to find confidence in himself. / He is more focused on effort and endurance than on technical refinement. He likes to ask for advice and he learns quickly. What he learnt from me ... What I learnt from him ...Mark2345 (1)
23 days agoThe compliments should be an extra section inside recommendations.
What makes recommendations valuable, is that they are rare, getting a recommendation is valuable.
If you replace that with an easy compliments button, everybody will have a recommendation, then its not gonna make you stand out anymore, and like there's gotta be a requirement to give a compliment, there's no point if anybody can do it tbh
Also we would start seeing way more BOTS since now people wont have to type.

I think he's arguing against the very idea of low-effort reviews and suggesting, if they must exist at all, at least have them subordinate to the normal reviews system
Mark2345 (1)
23 days agoExactly, I think that if you took the time of writting a recommendation for someone its because you had a good time and would like others to experience it, most recommedations are written by hand, thing that its rare nowadays, they are special. But if you give people a frictionless shortcut then we will lose the beautiful human side of this site. I think compliments could work as a premium item that you can buy and then send them to a user trough the chat, they have to choose if they accept it or reject and if they say yes then it gets displayed in their banner section, similiar of how steam or reddit awards work. They should also be fully customizable, like let people load their own images of the compliment logo or change the colour of the frame, I think this would make each one unique and not just a plain feature<\b>
